Some skid steer attachments are land tamers. There are many viable tracts of land that are perfect for a building construction project, but are hard to even survey properly as they are covered with brush, brambles, and trash trees. It is hard to see the potential underneath. There are many instances when a bit of property might seem like a real jungle, but with a touch of preparation from the proper skid steer attachment, this virtual wilderness can be readied fairly quickly for major improvement.
The attachment that will get things under control is the Brush-Hound flail mower. This skid steer attachment has been specifically designed for safely cutting and mulching thick, heavy grass as well as light brush. This attachment can be taken right into the thick brush and all that will be left behind the skid steer loader is a trail of finely shredded mulch.
Equipped with a high-strength double liner design with half-inch steel end plates, the Brush-Hound is incredibly strong and durable. It also has a number of formidable features. It is a heavy-duty skid steer loader attachment that, depending on the exact model, comes with as many as 52 reversible, high-density flail knives inside of several different enclosure widths. The flailing knives are able to pulverize plant material up to an inch in thickness.
As the flail knives do their work, it is important to note that this skid steer attachment is equipped with front and rear discharge flaps. The flaps virtually eliminate the possibility of throwing chunks of material out from underneath the Brush-Hound. Normal safety precautions and best practices should still be observed at all times, though, no matter how much protective cover the flaps offer.
Although this skid steer loader attachment can be purchased without a "gage wheel" (this is a 360-degree-swiveling wheel connected to the front of the mower enclosure), the wheel itself is actually one of the Brush-Hound's most desirable options. The replaceable side-mounted skid shoes ensure that the Brush-Hound unit rides evenly over the terrain it is meant to be clearing, but are really designed to excel on fairly even and consistent terrain. The gage wheel acts as swiveling third leg for the skid steer attachment, and fully supports the weight of the skid steer attachment to begin with.
With the smallest of the Brush-Hound attachments weighing in at almost 700 pounds, the gage wheel itself could potentially save stress on the boom and hydraulic gear of the skid steer loader. (Minimum horsepower required to use this attachment is 35, and it is also recommended that auxiliary output be rated at or above 13 gallons per minute). But keep in mind that the larger Brush-Hound units, up to 84 inches in width, require more power and higher hydraulic flow rates. These larger models get quite heavy, and letting the gage wheel do a lot of the heavy lifting is essential.
More importantly, perhaps, is that the gage wheel acts as a consistent leveler over especially bumpy, uneven and rutted parcels of land, and the gage wheel keeps the Brush-Hound skid steer attachment from possible scalping the surface. The Brush-Hound machine really acts like a self-enclosed mulching chipper, and the last thing anyone wants to do is tear up the very ground they are trying to make useful.
So the next time there is a piece of property that comes available, but seems completely impassable, don't give up hope. It might be just waiting to be built upon, and the surrounding community could really benefit from your construction solution. Only now there is a skid steer loader attachment that can tame the jungle and make the land usable again.
